Unfortunately, this is unlikely to be the case for as long as the world spins around. There are so many moving parts when it comes to house moves that things can, and generally will always, go wrong.

Today is all about mitigating some of the risks somewhat and alleviating as much stress from possible from your move. Let’s now jump into four actionable tips to help you along your way.

Arm yourself with the right tools

In the house moving industry, the right tools really come down to packing materials. There are so many comedy sketches of homeowners attempting to move their belongings, only for boxes to break from underneath them and all sorts of other issues.

Granted, you might be able to rely on supermarket boxes from time to time but on the most part, for the important belongings, make sure you invest in some decent kit.

…And also use those tools correctly

Once you are armed with such boxes, it’s all about using them correctly. This firstly revolves around packing shrewdly; contrary to popular belief it’s not about throwing in items in any old order and hoping for the best. There is a really good guide on how to pack effectively over here.

It’s at this point you should also have a think about an essentials box. Put simply, this is a box that will hold everything you will need in the days following your move. It’s a much better solution that rummaging around umpteen boxes – and making a real mess in the process!

Gather your priorities from the outset

Packing is a long-term process. If you’ve left it until a week before your departure, it’s probably too late.

Instead, this needs to be planned at least several weeks in advance. Prioritizing is key and making sure you start on the rooms that you use the least is one of the best moves you can make. For most people, this will probably be the spare bedroom.

While the kitchen or living room might contain the most items, leave this until the end. You’ll still be using these rooms frequently and having them at the back of the queue will make your life a lot easier.

Remember that the process doesn’t end until months later

So far, much of today’s article has focused on packing (and for very good reason, we should add). However, something that a lot of people forget about is the paperwork.

For the purposes of today, to highlight how house moves can linger on for months, we’ll focus on mail redirection. A lot of people moving home completely forget about their mail, usually resulting in a giant pile being delivered to their old address. Invest the time to inform each and every person and company that you are moving or buy a mail redirection service to cover you in the interim.
