How Many Different Types of Window Tinting Are There?

Cutting window film

As amazing as the automobile is, we have certainly taken things to the next level with aftermarket upgrades, as we so famously do with everything. People turn their regular houses into large dream homes through renovations. We turn our yards into a true personal oasis with things like landscaping and outdoor kitchens and pools. We also want to transform our cars and trucks into personalized automobiles that we really appreciate, and we do this in multiple ways. We get new rims and tires, louder stereo systems, and the most popular upgrade of all, we grab some tint for the windows.

When it comes to window tinting available at companies like Pro Window Tinting, the genre can get a little bit confusing. This is because you will run into quite a few types of tint and different nomenclature for the tint as it relates to the blackout percentage. While there might be some different types from which you can choose, the types themselves are simple enough to understand. There are potentially dozens if not hundreds of different types, but here is some information on the most popular variations of window tint.

Some Different Types of Window Tint

Dyed Film

This is known as one of the cheapest tint types, as it’s just dye that’s applied to a layer of adhesive film that will then be placed over your windows and fitted correctly. The dyed tint is recognizable by being very opaque in comparison to other varieties. With a dyed variety, you’re easily able to achieve that full blackout look, though it’s important to remember that this is nearer the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Metallic Film

A little higher up on the quality spectrum for window tinting, metallic tint film is all about helping you to reduce the heat that’s going into your automobile. It accomplishes this by being able to reflect the heat and UV radiation. You can still get a wide array of different tint percentages here, and metallic can look just about like any other sort of tint, but its main goal here is more about helping you to keep the heat out of a vehicle. As an added benefit, it’s also adding a lot of strength to the glass, so some people like it to make their windows stronger.

Carbon Film

This is likely the crème de la crème of the window tint film categories. Carbon film is all about achieving the best possible results without dealing with dyes or metallic materials. You get a dark matte finish here, not something that’s glossy and reflective, and this is the type of tint that you’re going to find on most high-end vehicles like sports cars and limos. It’s still great at blocking heat and adding privacy, but the real way this tint is able to stand out is that it just looks very aesthetically pleasing compared to the competition.

Ceramic Film

This is another film type that’s extremely high on the quality spectrum. It very much rivals carbon in overall quality, and some even argue that its quality levels are superior to carbon, just in the way it’s built and the fact that it can last for many years and is easier to apply. It’s also the most expensive type that you’re going to find, to be sure. The only area where it falls behind on the list is that it doesn’t look quite as natural as carbon film, which integrates better and looks more like a natural part of your car. Though with ceramic film, you’re getting superior quality with a film that’s totally resistant to fading and a film that doesn’t glare at all.

As you can see, these are the main categories of film. You should also realize that there are many competitors out there on the marketplace who may be combining certain materials and methods for hybrid films. There’s also the consideration of the location you’re choosing to apply your film for you. For instance, you can get the best film on the market, but if the people applying it aren’t skilled professionals, then the job won’t be good. So no matter which type you’re considering, make sure that you’re always going with a quality local company to handle your application needs.
