For thousands of years, the wisdom of Ancient India has helped people in these lands to survive the pestilence and hunger. India has remained one of the leading countries in terms of demographics in the world, although for most of its history its population has been extremely poor and deprived. Although it is considered to be the oldest science in India and one of the oldest in the world, Ayurveda should in fact be regarded as a product of new knowledge from the perspective of those past times. It has existed as an oral tradition for several thousand years before the New Era, but it was institutionalized as a system of healing methods only in the last centuries BC.
The written texts that are recognized as classic include the so-called Samhitas (from the Sanskrit concise works) of Sushruta, Chakra and Bela, as well as the works of Wagbat – Ashtanga Sangraha and Ashtanga Hridaya Samhita, and many others. These works had been composed between 1000 BC and the V century, and the Ayurveda doctors are among the first surgeons in the world to perform the first operations, caesarean sections, and more. Over time, Ayurveda has been influenced from other cultures, including the Tibetan, Chinese, Arabic and Persian. To this day, over a third of the clinics in modern India continue to offer traditional Ayurvedic medical products and services, sometimes in combination with yoga, Unani, naturopathy.
In the recent years many Hollywood celebrities and famous people from the music scene, both women and men, have chosen the Ayurvedic methods, and many have said that this has helped them maintain their appearance. But we have to keep in mind that Ayurveda does not help everyone in the same way. Dozens of detox programs and their variations have been developed, and in order to determine which one is best for us, we have to first determine what our constitution is. In other words, we need to find out what is the distribution of vital energies in our body, which Ayurveda calls Doshas. The organism of each of us is seen as a combination of one dominant and two latent doshas, or in the most common case – one predominant dosha, one less dominant dosha and one latent dosha, and – much less often – a three-dosha type: when all three types of energy are strongly expressed.
The absence of side effects and contraindications in most Ayurvedic recipes and massages allows them to be applied even in infants. Ayurveda is especially suitable for the prevention and treatment of caries and early decay of baby teeth. Some of the traditional massages can be applied since birth and are very useful for stimulating the mental and physical development of children. We should not turn to Ayurveda for the treatment of acute illnesses in children such as pneumonia and bronchitis, traumatic conditions, and allergic attacks at the time of their onset. It is especially important, in order to cure an allergy, that the undergoing treatment should not be performed during the exacerbated phase of the disease if we want it to be effective. However, we should not forget to consult a specialist before proceeding with the procedures, because many things that Ayurveda does not prohibit for children are not recommended for women during pregnancy and lactation.
However, the true effect of Ayurveda is not in a pill we can take, it is not in the magical power of any herbs, nor in the miraculous effect of massages. In order to feel the full potential of healing, we must give ourselves fully to it. Observe the instructions of the Ayurvedic experts strictly and follow the diet and exercise program.
