Europe is trying to decrease the accident level by using technology. Because of that, Europe is about to introduce a car with the latest technology to stop drivers speeding. So, what kind of technology it is? Let’s talk about this new car below.
A Car with New Features
Due to the plan to create a safety car, Europe will have a car with new features. One of the features is an intelligent speed assistance technology. Just like the name of the feature, this technology helps the driver to control their speed. As a result, drivers are always driving at the right speed because it is controlled by the Intelligent Speed Assistance or ISA. Another new feature which will be installed in the car is a technology which can detect the condition of the driver such as when the driver is drowsy or distracted by any objects or something. The feature also records the data and it can be used to analyze the cause of the accident accurately.
The Improvement of a Car with ISA
There is a significant difference between an ordinary car and a car with an Intelligent Speed Assistance or ISA. The European Transport Safety Council or ETSC said that ISA is supported by several high-tech systems including GPS, digital mapping, and cameras. Those systems record the location and the speed information of the car. Anytime ISA detects that the driver is above the speed limit, this technology will reduce the engine power and speed. Based on the information, the system doesn’t stop or reduce the speed automatically. The system works by giving a warning to the driver to reduce the speed because they are above the speed limit. After the warning, the driver has to reduce the speed of the car to achieve the normal speed. Nowadays, some of the cars have been installing ISA technology. The rest of the cars are supported by emergency braking, camera, and lane-keeping assistance.
The Reason to Install ISA in the Cars in Europe
The European Transport Safety Council decides to create this rule because of the latest traffic data. Based on the EU Commissioner 25.000 people love their lives on the road every year. The main cause of the accident is human error. Because of this data, Europe government is trying to do something to reduce the accident and to increase the safety riding on the road. One of the ways is by installing the latest advanced safety features in the vehicles in Europe. By using this technology, the impact is similar to a driver who uses a safety belt.
The Application of the Technology
Until today, there are several cars which following this rule. For example, Volvo is designing some of their cars with in-car cameras and sensors. Those systems are giving signs to drivers to drive safely. Interestingly, the system is also able to intervene in the car if the driver ignores the warning signal and keep driving at a high speed. In this condition, the system is able to slow down the speed automatically and even parking the car in a safe place. This technology will be installed in some of Volvo’s cars in the early of 2020. Nowadays, Volvo is only introducing some of the systems installed on the cars. For example, some of the cars, especially the cars which will be introduced in 2020 are set with a 180 kilometers per hour or 112 miles per hour speed limit.
Another reason why Volvo installs cameras and sensors inside the car is to prevent a fatal accident caused by drunk driving. This is concerning to the data that in 2017, there were 10.874 deaths in the U.S caused by drunk driving. The cameras and sensors are installed to prevent accidents instead of limiting the impact of an accident. Volvo hopes that the technology can reduce the accident level on the road not only reduce the impacts after the accidents.
The Time to Introduce the Car
The plan to use a new car which can limit the speed and detect the driver has been announced by the European Commission. They have sent the agreement to the European Parliament and Council and waiting for the approval. If the agreement is approved by the European Parliament and Council, the new car will be launched in 2022. There is no clear information yet about the exact launching date but most all vehicle companies which follow the rule are preparing their cars from this year to 2020. Then, it hopes that the cars with the latest safety driving features are ready to drive in 2022 and it achieves the goal to reduce accident on the road in Europe.
